While vector databases were once considered niche, they have gained widespread attention for their ability to provide context and long-term memory to large language models. Many players in the database space are now rushing to integrate vector search into their existing products. Pinecone, founded by the team behind Amazon SageMaker, is at the forefront of this trend, having raised a total of $138 million since its establishment in 2019. Today, Pinecone unveils Pinecone Serverless, an advanced serverless architecture designed to enhance its service.
Pinecone Serverless now separates reads, writes, and storage, resulting in reduced costs for users. The new architecture boasts a potential 10x to 100x cost reduction, according to Pinecone. It introduces support for vector clustering on top of blob storage, leading to lower latencies and increased capacity for handling massive data sizes. Additionally, Pinecone Serverless incorporates new indexing and retrieval algorithms to facilitate rapid vector search across blob storage. The service now includes a multi-tenant compute layer as well.
“Pinecone Serverless, being truly serverless, eliminates the need for developers to provision or manage infrastructure, enabling them to effortlessly build GenAI applications and bring them to market faster,” the company states in its announcement. “This facilitates the development of reliable, effective, and impactful GenAI applications for developers with use cases of any size, ushering in a new wave of remarkable GenAI applications to the market.”
To enhance its offering, Pinecone Serverless will have integrations with various AI and backend services, including Anthropic, Anyscale, Cohere, Confluent, Langchain, Pulumi, and Vercel. Guillermo Rauch, CEO and Founder of Vercel, commented, “Vercel’s mission is to help the world ship the best products, and in the age of GenAI that requires Pinecone as the vector database component. That’s why we are announcing that all Vercel users can now add Pinecone Serverless to their applications in just a few clicks, with more exciting capabilities to come.”
